Welcome To THE ZOO: What Animal Are You?

February 24, 20233 min read

Animal profiling is a popular tool used in workplace training and coaching to help individuals understand their own behavioural (communication, personality) styles and the styles of others.

Each of these styles is associated with a different animal:

  • Lion - assertiveness, competitiveness, and a focus on results.

  • Monkey - extroversion, sociability, and a focus on people.

  • Horse - patience, empathy, and a focus on relationships.

  • Owl - attention to detail, organization, and a focus on quality.

The lion is associated with dominant behaviour, including assertiveness, competitiveness, and a focus on results. The monkey is associated with influential behaviour, including extroversion, sociability, and a focus on people. The Horse is associated with steady behaviour, including patience, empathy, and a focus on relationships. The owl is associated with conscientious behaviour, including attention to detail.

Understanding these behavioural styles and their corresponding animal metaphors can help individuals improve their communication skills, work more effectively with others, and develop stronger relationships in the workplace.

For example, individuals with a dominant lion style may be direct and results-oriented in their communication, while those with an influential monkey style may use humour and social skills to build rapport with others. Individuals with a steady horse style may be patient and empathetic in their interactions, while those with a conscientious owl style may be detail-oriented and focused on quality.

Thank you Speak First for introducing the Animal Profile.

By understanding and adapting to different behavioural styles, individuals can improve their communication and collaboration with colleagues, build stronger relationships, and achieve greater success in the workplace.

  • Lion - People with a lion style tend to be assertive, confident, and goal-oriented. They are focused on achieving results and may be comfortable taking charge in a variety of situations. They are typically direct communicators who value efficiency and productivity. They may be seen as competitive or confrontational at times, but they are driven by a desire to succeed and are not afraid to take risks.

  • Monkey - People with a monkey style tend to be outgoing, sociable, and energetic. They are natural networkers who enjoy building relationships and making connections with others. They may be more interested in the people aspect of their work than the actual work itself. They tend to be expressive and may use humour and other forms of entertainment to engage and persuade others.

  • Horse - People with a horse style tend to be calm, patient, and empathetic. They are focused on building strong relationships and creating a supportive environment for themselves and others. They may be skilled at resolving conflicts and diffusing tense situations. They tend to be good listeners who value harmony and stability.

  • Owl - People with an owl style tend to be analytical, detail-oriented, and systematic. They are focused on quality and accuracy and may be skilled at identifying and solving problems. They tend to be logical and may be less interested in building relationships than in getting the job done correctly. They are typically organized and efficient in their work.

It's important to note that while people may have a dominant style, they can also display traits from other styles depending on the situation. For example, a lion-style individual may need to use their horse-style traits to build trust with their team, or an owl-style individual may need to use their monkey-style traits to persuade a client. By understanding their own style and the styles of others, individuals can learn to adapt their communication and behaviour to achieve their goals and build stronger relationships in the workplace.
