Different Communication Skills a Successful Leader Should Have

April 21, 20224 min read

You can be the hardest worker, have the most experience, or have the best qualifications, but none of that matters if you don’t have the ability to communicate effectively. After all, the leader’s job is to take the knowledge, experience, and ideas they have and turn them into progress, so they need to be able to articulate their ideas effectively to make all of that happen.

Why is a Good Communication Skill Important?

Honing communication skills will enable you to get your ideas across in a way that inspires your team to get behind you and follow you. This is because communication is an important life skill. It’s the way we share information with others, and it can affect our health, relationships and work.

As a leader, you need to be able to communicate your vision clearly to your team and stakeholders, and be able to listen to what they have to say. You will also have to deal with difficult situations, particularly if you are leading a team of people through a challenging project.

If you can’t communicate well, it can be difficult to deal with these situations. With that in mind, what are the various communication skills that every successful leader needs to improve on?

1. Proactive Listening

As a leader, you can’t just do all the talking, you also have to be able to listen to them. Being a good listener is vital to building trust and respect in your team and ensuring they want to work with you.

A good leader listens to their team on a daily basis, to make sure they are getting their ideas across effectively, and that their team members know where they stand. They then analyze, synthesize, and reflect on the feedback before taking action.

Proactive listening is a skill that requires you to be fully engaged in what the speaker is saying. You will know you are doing it well if you are either able to actively listen, or ask questions that help uncover what the speaker is feeling or thinking.

2. The Ability to Communicate in a Clear and Concise Manner

As a leader, you are in a position where you communicate with your team and stakeholders every day. The better you communicate your plans, goals and vision to your team, the more they will understand what you want them to do, and how they need to do it.

This is also important when you need to deal with difficult situations and explain your decisions to other members of your team. To be a good communicator, you need to be able to clearly and concisely explain what you are thinking and how you are going to move forward.

3. The Ability to Ask Good Questions

In order to be a good communicator, you need to be able to ask good questions to get information you want or need to know. This will help you uncover dilemmas and problems, and the best way to deal with them. Your questions will also help you understand what is on your team members’ minds and find out what they think of your ideas.

Good questions will help you confirm what you already know, discover new facts, and identify the causes of problems and dilemmas. This will allow you to make decisions based on the best information available, and you will also be able to inspire your team by leading them to the best possible solution.

4. The Ability to Understand Body Language

Every person has a unique set of body cues that they give off when they are communicating. This includes their eye contact, posture and mannerisms. As a leader, you need to be aware of these cues, so that you can read the person so that you know exactly what they are thinking.

Good body language will help you identify your emotions, understand what’s going on in someone else’s mind, and make you more effective in an interview or a negotiation. Body language is also an important way to handle difficult situations.

The Bottom Line: How Good Communication Skills Lay the Foundation of an Inspiring Leader

As a leader, your ability to communicate well will give your team the confidence to follow you and to trust that you know what you are doing. Communication is an important life skill and having good communication skills can have a huge impact on your personal and professional life. Indeed, it’s something that we should all be striving to be better at.
