5 Absolute Traits Of A Great Inspirational Public Speaker

March 04, 20193 min read

According to the Chapman University survey of America’s Top Fears (2015), around 28.4% of participants admitted that they are ‘afraid or very afraid’ of public speaking. In a world where glassophobia is so common, there are also great speakers who move masses with their speeches and influence them positively.

If you are the one who wants to convey inspirational messages or inspire the world with encouraging thoughts, you would be relieved to know that public speaking skills can be improved and refined if you use the right tactics and strategies.

But, before you go ahead to prepare, always remember that:

“A speaker should approach his preparation not by what he wants to say, but by what he wants to learn.” ― Todd Stocker

To be counted amongst the successful inspirational public speakers, first of all, you need to be aware of the key traits of an outstanding inspirational speaker. Only when you know what you want to be, you can walk the path of the public speaking journey with least hassles.

So, take a look at the below-mentioned traits of world-known inspirational public speakers.

1. Passion

Just like every other profession or task, you can breathe life into your speech only when you are passionate about what you want to say and learn. The first thing anyone notices in a great inspirational speaker is that they have passion. They feel content in what they do. They are full of energy when it comes to inspiring others to live their dreams.

2. Freshness

Though all inspirational public speakers are similar in what they do (i.e. inspire others), they are different in how they do it. When you compare Zig Ziglar and Jim Rohn, you will find out that their style was unique. Even though they have passed away, they are still popular for motivating and inspiring their audiences. Therefore, ensure that you have something fresh in your mind so that people find intrigue and freshness in your speech.

3. Empathy

Another special quality you should have as a successful inspirational public speaker is to have empathy for others. When you are able to feel and understand what others are experiencing within your frame of reference, you develop a quality of being connected to your audience.

Let’s say when you are trying to inspire a demotivated employee; first, you need to be able to feel the experience the situation he/she is going through. This will enable you to connect with them and assist them. Please note this is not sympathy.

Note that people always hear advice from everyone around them but they listen to only those they feel connected to.

4. Self-awareness

Being aware of yourself and your surroundings is a must for you to create a strong impression on others. When you are conscious about your feelings, character, motives, and desires, it reflects in your clarity of thoughts.

“Communication without clarity is noise. Speak with purpose and you’ll propel your audience to take massive action towards a journey of self-improvement.”
― Farshad Asl

When you are clear about your thoughts and beliefs, people are more likely to listen to you and follow you.

5. Authenticity

Authenticity comes when you are representing yourself, not some other person. Articulate the thoughts well that come from deep within your heart. No audience gets touched by speakers who try to imitate others. It’s okay to have a role model but when you are entering this profession, you need to create your own style, thoughts, and way of delivery.

When you have or develop all these qualities, other traits of an effective inspirational public speaker, like confidence and fearlessness, will infuse in your personality on their own.
